Black News Channel Network Selects Devlin Design Group for Set and Lighting Design

Thursday April 4, 2019

The recent announcement of the upcoming launch of the Black News Channel, the nation’s only provider of 24/7 cable news programming created “by people of color for people of color”, created quite a buzz throughout the cable news industry. BNC is an independent network, minority owned and operated. BNC’s mission is to provide intelligent programming that is informative, educational, entertaining, inspiring and empowering to its African American audience.

“BNC’s purpose is to be a news organization that gives voice to the varied experiences, issues, points-of-view and priorities that matter to African Americans,” says network Chairman J.C. Watts, Jr. “We selected DDG to design our set and lighting in a way that is culturally unique to our audience and reflects the prosperous, professional, and dynamic community we serve. Both our set and our programming will be different from anything out there today.”

For this new African American network, BNC chose Devlin Design Group to design a scenic storytelling environment that would create a deep connection to their target audience.  Capitalizing on information gathered from focus groups, the distinctive design is truly a collaborative effort when it comes to shaping the wide array of performance areas in the main studio and the on-camera high-tech newsroom.

The main studio located in Tallahassee, Florida, is the ‘home-base’ for the network’s news, lifestyle and sports programming. A number of virtual sets, located throughout BNC’s bureaus, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington D.C., New Orleans and Jacksonville, will also be designed by Team DDG.

“DDG is proud to collaborate with the team at BNC to create a dynamic storytelling environment based on their vision for this ground-breaking network.” – Kartik Dakshinamoorthy, Devlin Design Group, VP Scenic Design.

The BNC studio design was recently unveiled at the NAACP Image Awards non-televised dinner, held March 29, 2019 at the historic Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. BNC is slated to debut November 15, 2019, to an estimated 33 million households.

Devlin Design Group is one of the most influential set design and lighting design firms in the world. They are renowned for their iconic sets, expert scenic lighting and their commitment to design excellence, creativity, knowledge and innovation.
