KOMO ABC

The word ‘inspiration’ comes from the Latin word ‘inspirare’ which means ‘inspirit’ or ‘divine guidance’. In other words, inspiration is something you feel on the inside. It is a driving force! The driving force for this project, tap into the inspiration of the local area and capture the heart and soul of the ‘Emerald City’ for the Seattle audience. A custom illustration of the skyline and snowcapped Mt. Rainier make a stunning main backdrop. The beauty of nature in the Northwest is displayed throughout the design. A pod of Orca whales provides the motivation for the unique organic desks. The floor graphics are inspired by local Native American Northwest tribal art. A nod to the thriving tech industry, and Seattle’s well know rainy climate, is captured in an RGB LED backlit pattern dubbed ‘digital rain’. The overall design is not only beautiful but deeply meaningful to the KOMO team. Above the main performance area is a helicopter blade, placed as a tribute to longtime News photographer Bill Strothman, and pilot Gary Pfizner, who lost their lives in a crash yards away from the Space Needle.

ABC 30, a Disney O&O located in California’s Central Valley region serves a culturally diverse community. Fresno’s identity is deeply intertwined with its agricultural roots and is referred to as the farm basket. The client request, the design derive inspiration from this important aspect of the area. The feel, future forward but remain true to the legacy of this local station. An abstract graphic of tilled fields surrounds the backlit RGB color changing elements surrounding the set. A dimensional basket weave pattern honors the history of the area. The future forward aspect of the design, five sizable LED arrays add variety and flexibility to performance areas around the set. Talent can easily walk and talk and interact with the on-air team engaging the audience with visual content.
